A Mediatomb Update
September 28th, 2008I wrote a tutorial back in Dec 2007, on getting the free mediatomb application running (with Fink) on Mac OS X Leopard for streaming media to a Playstation 3 system on your home network. This tutorial gets a lot of visitors even today, and therefore I wanted to post an update which should resolve any further unanswered questions. At the time of writing, I had documented some issues encountered while getting mediatomb version 0.10.0 to install and run correctly on my OS X machine. Since then, the application has been updated and several issues have been corrected. The current version 0.11 of mediatomb installed correctly on my system with no failures (removes the big step of patching the string_converter.cc file).
I shall assume you have Fink correctly installed and running on your system. If not, there is a tutorial on the Fink website (or refer to my previous post).
Fetch a copy of mediatomb by executing the following operation in Terminal -
$ fink fetch mediatomb
Next, install.
$ fink install mediatomb
You will need to initialize the mediatomb application by running the following command (assuming you chose the default path during the Fink installation) -
$ /sw/bin/mediatomb
This should create a .mediatomb folder in your home directory, with the config.xml file included for mediatomb settings.
This config.xml file has also been updated to include helpful comments on the updates required to run mediatomb with a PS3, as follows -

Make the necessary changes, and you should be along on your path to streaming your media effortlessly to the PS3. As always, you can let me know in the comments if something did not work for you. Good luck!

Hey, I was trying to install Mediatomb for use with with Ps3 on a Mac Book Pro, and it took ages for it to download some 250 packages. But to my despair when I try install it, it comes up with a error like
Failed: phase compiling: dbus-1.2.3-6 failed
and quits.
Plz help

Hi Pratik. Are you trying to install mediatomb version 0.11.0-6? (you can find out by typing > fink describe mediatomb ). I would also try doing a ’selfupdate’ and ‘cleanup’ before attempting to install. I just tried purging and reinstalling this version of mediatomb and it worked fine. Are you running OS X Leopard? Perhaps you could try getting an earlier version of mediatomb to see if that might work on your system, just a thought.

Hello Sameer,
Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes I’m on Leopard. I removed Fink and reinstalled it with fink commander. I then tried to install mediatomb 0.11.0.-6. It first downloaded some 309 packages and then another 250mb of stuff. Now it has been “compiling packages” for about 12 hours now, does it usually take this long?..
I have my fingers crossed..

hey Sameer,
I got my Media tomb running finally..! yay! I got stuck again on some gtk2 this time but I figured out this was because of a unlinked library, so I linked it and after another 3 hours done! then I got that 203 error but I figured I had medialink running so swtiched that off and I was through :D!
But now there’s another issue.. I tried to play files and though it plays mpegs and some avi’s but not all avi’s and even not mp4s :(, do you have any idea about that. Also, I tried to edit the config.xml for using mkv files (edit given on http://mediatomb.cc/dokuwiki/transcoding:transcoding#directv_hr2x_transcoding).. but besides editing it , it requires me to create some shell scripts, but have no idea on where to save them, so I tried saving them on sw\bin\ and sw\bin\bash\, is that right? cause on running mediatomb it gives me the error “error in configuration, transcoding profile “mpeg2trans” could not find transcoding command ffmpegvideo in $PATH “.. could you advise me on this please…
Your posts have been very very helpful..
Many thanks
